Disc findings and symptoms are not always the same thing
Imaging reports can sound alarming, but a scan is only one part of the clinical picture. A physiotherapy assessment considers symptom behavior, strength, sensation, movement tolerance, daily demands and any warning signs that may require medical review.
The goal is to understand which movements and loads are currently tolerated, then build a plan that improves confidence and function without unnecessary fear of movement.
What physiotherapy may include
Depending on the assessment, care may include education about pacing and positions, mobility work, graded strengthening, trunk and hip exercises, walking progression, ergonomic guidance and a home programme.
Treatment should be adjusted to the person rather than forcing everyone through the same exercise list. Some people benefit from more movement early; others need a slower progression during an irritable phase.
When back or leg pain needs urgent medical review
Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, rapidly worsening weakness, major trauma, unexplained fever with severe back pain, or other significant new neurological symptoms.
Routine physiotherapy is appropriate only after urgent conditions have been excluded when red-flag symptoms are present.
